GUARDIAN GAMES: A FUNDRAISER OBSTACLE COURSE FOR LOCAL HEROES
– The Guardian Art self-defense organization, is hosting its debut “Guardian Games” for all Bay Area community members on Sunday August 21st at their Milpitas-based gymnasium.
“Guardian Games” fuses together physical obstacles and mental challenges along the lines of popular shows such as “Ninja Warrior” and “American Gladiators.” Competitors, ranging from kids to adults, will engage in various physical activities such as running across falling pillars, climbing towers, and jumping gaps in a safely padded environment.
The event also serves as a fundraiser and all proceeds will go towards the T.R.E.A.T.Y. Total Immersion School, which supports the Native Americans of the Oglala Sioux Tribe on the Pine Ridge reservation. Situated in South Dakota, Pine Ridge is the eighth largest reservation in the United States and also the poorest. Unemployment on the reservation hovers between 80% and 85%, and 49% of their population live below the federal poverty level. Many of the families have no electricity, telephone, running water, or sewage systems and many use wood stoves to heat their homes, with depleting limited wood resources.
In addition to the physical challenges during the “Guardian Games”, the obstacle courses will highlight key issues facing the Pine Ridge reservation in order to increase public awareness.
“The Guardian Games represents taking action on your challenges versus just talking about them,” states Caleb Madrid, co-founder of Guardian Art and a Native American himself. “If you ever wanted to be a hero, you should sign up because you’ll not only get to face the adventures of a hero, but you will actually help save lives.”
